200g Savoiardi Biscuits (Italian)

250g Mascarpone or thickened cream

1 to 2 fresh egg yolk/s

200ml condensed milk

50ml brandy/whiskey or fruit juice (optional)

15oml freshly-made strong coffee

500ml home-made Custard (or bought custard for a quicker result)

50g corn flour

300ml thickened cream

30g sugar (optional)

Glace cherries for deco plus grated dark chocolate

18 cm deep clear bowl


In the strong coffee add brandy or juice then let it cool.  In a large bowl break the biscuits into bite-size pieces. Drizzle the coffee mix over the broken biscuits and stir to coat with the liquid. In a clean bowl beat Mascarpone or cream with egg yolk then add the condensed milk and beat till thick and frothy. Add the biscuit mix into the cream mixture and stir gently to mix-in well without over-mixing to avoid breaking-up the biscuits too much.  Add this to the deep bowl and level the mixture and set aside in the fridge.

The custard can be prepared earlier and kept chilled.  If using a bought custard then add a little cornflour to some of it then mix well with the rest to incorporate the two together. Bring to simmer over medium to low heat to thicken the custard then remove from the heat and let it cool. When the custard is cold pour it over the biscuit mix and level the top. Now beat the cream with the sugar if using and when it has thickened pour the cream over the custard. Decorate with glace cherries as shown and grate some dark chocolate over the top before serving. Decorate it with your own variation like dusting of coffee, other fruit, sprinkles etc as desired.

Variations and My Story

Over our Christmas holiday we were too busy to prepare my mother-in-law’s famous trifle so this is an easy alternative recipe and it gave me the chance to enjoy trifle and tiramisu all in one. It is a very quick recipe that can be made as individual desserts or simply as a one large one. You can decide what you display it in so explore!
